If you have a database and want to create reports and charts
but you need to know SQL to access your database and
are struggling - or you find it's just too difficult and time consuming - well here is the
answer. Tableau Software - data visualisation tool. No need for a SQL tutorial or SQL help or
to learn SQL.
I have a customer who could not readily access
and report on his departmental hospital packaged and specialised database. There was a report
writer provided with the system from one of the big business intelligence software
companies, but it was just too cumbersome and tedious to use. The SQL Language presented a big
learning curve for them. Within minutes of using Tableau he was making reports for his
department!
All you need to understand is the basic
structure of your data and what are the common columns between the tables in your database.
Tableau does the rest.
Here is an example
below. Just drag and drop the data items you need onto the columns and
Rows shelfs - see red lines below. Your data items are all shown on the left in two categories -
dimensions and measures. When you drag them to the row and columns shelf they take the SUM by
default - you can of course readily change this.
The graph to the right suddenly appears giving
you a powerful visualisation of your database data. There are many different chart types
available. You might think Excel can do this but Tableau far exceeds the capabilities of
Excel...you will be surprised.

Now there is no need for complicated SQL WHERE
clauses, all you do is right click on a dimension or filter and Choose 'Quick filter' and
then you can dynamically filter your data using the check boxes. See the example below with the
filter highlighted with the red circle.

To make the visualisation or visualization if your come from the
USA, drag the Product Type to the color shelf and the graph colours give you more visual clues to
understanding your data.
You can add annotations too so help others readily spot
outliers or trends. You can then use the FREE Tableau Reader to distribute your dynamic report or
chart to others. You can even be more sophisticated by making a dashboard and making it available
through Tableau Server software and a Web Browser.
You can make clever reports too see the
example below with running totals..
Tableau comes with a great set of FREE videos showing you exactly how to get the
most out of the product and if you purchase it from us we are always at the end of a phone
